Our History

July 2009 – Jess Rooney joins New Leaders and begins writing the charter for People’s Prep.

 

August 29, 2011 – We open our doors for the first-ever day of school at People’s Prep, welcoming 95 freshmen into the Class of 2019.

 

August 26, 2012 – Tahirah Jordan Crawford joins the Wolfpack and officially launches the Office of College Placement, providing our students with college advising, summer opportunities, post-secondary support, and much more.

 

September 2013 – Our Community Programs begin with 30 interns working through Newark and across multiple industries. Learn more about our Community Programs here.

 

August 25, 2014 – The Class of 2022 joins the Wolfpack, marking our first year as a full high school with students in grades 9-12.

 

October 2014 – The Class of 2019 has its first college acceptances!

 

December 14, 2014 – The State of New Jersey renews People’s Prep for five additional years.

 

June 20, 2015 – The Class of 2019 graduates and becomes People’s Prep first cohort of alumni, which has grown to over 200 alumni today.

 

September 14, 2015 – The Wolfpack plays our first football game to kick off our newly added Athletic Department.

 

January 7, 2016 – Our Board of Directors and Friends of People’s Prep bid on student art at our inaugural Art Show.

 

April 4, 2017 – The Office of College Placement receives a grant to host our Young Women’s Leadership And Advocacy Program, a summer opportunity for female students to gain skills to create change in their community.
